About Upper Florida Keys weddings

The Florida Keys are the most-requested destination wedding market in the continental United States, and the Upper Keys, Key Largo through Islamorada, mile markers 90 down to 70, are where most of the volume actually lands. Closest to Miami International, the highest concentration of resort-grade venues, and the easiest end of the archipelago for guest logistics. Modern Era Weddings has been the Keys-resident production partner for over a decade and operates Florida Keys Signature Wedding Weekends, a dedicated multi-day Keys destination wedding platform.

Upper Keys wedding venues

  • Cheeca Lodge & Spa (Islamorada, MM 82), the wedding capital of the Upper Keys; Atlantic-facing beach ceremonies, multiple ballrooms, full multi-day capacity.
  • Baker's Cay Resort (Key Largo, MM 97), Curio Collection by Hilton; lush Florida-Bay-side property with a wedding-pier ceremony site.
  • Ocean Reef Club (north Key Largo), gated luxury community, multiple ceremony and reception sites, the most exclusive end of the market.
  • Postcard Inn / Amara Cay / Hilton Key Largo / Founders Park, the working-stack of Upper Keys wedding venues; we've produced at all of them dozens of times.

Why the Upper Keys are the easiest Keys wedding to plan

The Upper Keys are 60-90 minutes from Miami International Airport on US-1, which solves the single hardest logistical problem of any Keys wedding: getting your guest list onto the islands. Lower Keys weddings (Marathon, Key West) require either a 2.5-4 hour drive from MIA or direct flights into Marathon (MTH) or Key West (EYW), which compresses guest arrival windows dramatically. Upper Keys weddings let your full guest list fly into one major airport and arrive on the same evening.

The peak Keys wedding window

November through April is the Upper Keys wedding peak, temperatures in the 70s, low humidity, almost no rain, and reliable sunsets between 5:45 PM (December) and 8:00 PM (April). May and October are excellent shoulder months. June through September is technically possible but you're contending with afternoon thunderstorms and Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 - November 30). We have a documented hurricane-season risk plan for couples booking summer Keys dates.

Production realities outside vendors don't anticipate

  • Generator power, several beachfront ceremony sites have no nearby outlets. We bring silent inverter generators standard.
  • Salt-air corrosion, sound and lighting gear degrades fast. Local-resident vendors maintain Keys-specific rigs; mainland vendors often won't risk their gear on a Keys gig.
  • Sound ordinances, most island municipalities have amplified-music cutoffs (commonly 10:00 PM outdoors); after-party programming has to move indoors or to a beach-bar partner venue.
  • Sunset shifts 2 hours+ across the year, a 6 PM ceremony in December starts in twilight; in June it's full daylight. Photographer and DJ both need this dialed in.
  • Vendor travel surcharges, expect 15-25% on top of mainland pricing for any vendor based north of Homestead. Locally-staffed Keys vendors avoid this entirely.

Multi-day weddings

Multi-day weddings in Upper Florida Keys

Welcome parties, ceremonies, after-parties, farewell brunches — one creative team, one cohesive arc, hosted entertainment that keeps every guest in the moment.

Florida Keys wedding weekends are the most-developed multi-day wedding format anywhere in the continental U.S. The Upper Keys resort venue stack (Cheeca Lodge, Baker's Cay, Ocean Reef Club, Postcard Inn) is fundamentally built for on-property 3-day takeovers, your guests fly into Miami, drive an hour down US-1, check into the resort, and don't leave again until Sunday. We operate Florida Keys Signature Wedding Weekends as a dedicated multi-day Keys destination wedding platform.

The standard arc

  • Thursday or Friday welcome night, a sunset cocktail party on the resort beach, dinner at the resort restaurant or a nearby Islamorada institution (Morada Bay, Pierre's, Lazy Days), or a private charter cocktail cruise. Hosted trivia or music bingo is our most-booked welcome format, Keys-bound guests have already invested in the trip and are ready to engage.
  • Saturday ceremony + reception, beach or pier ceremony, oceanfront cocktail hour, ballroom or tented reception. Full DJ + lighting + optional live musicians. Most Keys municipalities have outdoor amplified-music cutoffs (commonly 10:00 PM); after-parties move indoors to the resort bar or a beach-bar partner venue.
  • Sunday farewell brunch, poolside or beachside at the resort, or a charter brunch out to a sandbar. Acoustic background music, optional hosted format.

Lodging buyouts and on-property logistics

Cheeca Lodge, Baker's Cay, and Ocean Reef Club all support partial-or-full property buyouts for weekend takeovers. Postcard Inn and Amara Cay run smaller-scale full-property weekends comfortably. The on-property model dramatically simplifies the entire weekend, guests are sleeping, eating, drinking, and getting married within a 5-minute walk. No shuttle logistics, no last-mile risk, no late guests.

Transportation

The single most-important transportation decision in a Keys wedding is the MIA-to-resort move. We coordinate with regional charter operators (Wedding Wagon, Keys Shuttle, Coastal Express) for full-bus moves on Friday morning out of Miami International. Couples whose guests fly into FLL or PBI sometimes split into separate shuttles. For Lower Keys (Marathon, Key West), direct flights into MTH or EYW are the better play for guests willing to skip the drive, see the Middle Florida Keys and Key West pages for that detail.

Production realities

Keys weddings have specific gear and contingency requirements that mainland vendors routinely under-prepare for: silent inverter generator power for beach ceremony sites, salt-air-rated audio gear, wireless mic redundancy against Atlantic wind, hurricane-aware contracts (June through November), sunset-time variance (December sunsets at 5:45 PM, April sunsets at 7:55 PM, entirely different ceremony timelines). Modern Era is Keys-resident; this is built into every quote.

What we recommend

For a 3-day Upper Keys wedding weekend with 100-180 guests, plan on Thursday or Friday welcome with hosted entertainment, Saturday wedding day with full DJ + lighting + indoor after-party, and Sunday farewell brunch with acoustic or hosted format. Book 12-14 months out, these venues sell out faster than couples expect.
