We have been throwing parties in this city since 2012, forty-one at the Omni William Penn, thirty-seven at LeMont, thirty-five at Soldiers and Sailors, thirty-four at the Sheraton on the south bank and twenty-nine at Phipps, and enough at the University Club, the Priory, the Circuit Center, Heinz History Center and the Pennsylvanian that we could tell you which corner of each room goes quiet first.

What is unusual about Pittsburgh, and what couples moving here from other markets notice first, is how few of its best venues are hotel ballrooms. A memorial hall, a Victorian glasshouse, a railway station concourse, an industrial shell on the South Side, a century-old private club. Most cities give you a choice between four ballrooms with different carpet. This one makes you choose between genuinely different buildings, which is better, and it means the decision actually matters, because a night that works in one of them would be wrong in another.
