A block can make lodging easier for guests, but the name alone does not tell you the risk. Compare the agreement, release dates, pickup requirements, and fees before signing.
Understanding your options
A useful hotel option gives guests a clear place to start without implying that every attendee must stay there. Location, transportation plans, accessibility, and a range of room needs can matter as much as the quoted nightly rate.
A courtesy block commonly holds rooms until a release date without requiring the couple to guarantee a pickup, but every hotel sets its own conditions. A contracted block is a negotiated agreement that may include minimum room revenue, deposits, cancellation terms, or attrition damages. The contract, not the label, controls.
Build a working estimate from invited households, known local guests, wedding-party plans, and likely shared rooms. Ask what happens if demand is lower or higher than expected, whether inventory can be added, and when unused rooms return to general sale.
The timeline is everything
Nine to twelve months before the wedding is a useful starting point for many events, especially when guests will travel or local demand may be high. It is not a universal deadline. Venue location, event dates, hotel contracting cycles, and the timing of your guest communication can move that conversation earlier or later.
